History

WHO WE ARE

Since our founding in 1990, Green University has been actively dedicated to sustainability and green initiatives which we believe to be fundamental to our society's survival. This is made possible through our collaborative partnerships with sustainable oriented corporations and government programs who support our student's academic and social journeys throughout their four years here and beyond graduation. Here at Green University our students are dedicated to a green lifestyle and deeply committed to their education inside and outside of the classroom. We expect our students to embody and apply the knowledge, skills, and tools needed to make lasting positive change in the world around them. Our unique approach to finance and funding programs to not only assist our students financially but also to provide a new standard to affording higher education.

We are committed to using energy, water and consumables in economical and environmentally sound ways.

The sustainable or “going green” movement has been something that continues to evolve and change our world for the better, challenging us to become more of  an environmentally friendly planet. While environmental activist, Rachel Carson's powerful book, Silent Spring, released in the 1970s ignited the sustainable movement in America, environmentalism in America tracks back to the 1840s. From American philosopher and naturalist Henry David Thoureau to Teddy Roosevelt's establishment of the natural park system, environmentalism has remained crucial to our survival.

When Mr. Roosevelt became president in 1901 he started the United States Forest Services (USFS) which implemented 150 national forests, 51 bird reserves, 4 national game preserves and 5 national parks. He used his voice and platform to protect wildlife. While he acknowledged how well America used resources like coal, iron, oil and gas, he strived to better the future realizing that more work need to be done with our polluted rivers and soil degradation. Since this program implementation in the early 1900s, America has recognized the importance of developing a more sustainable environment especially the considering the large oil spill in 1969 in Santa Barbara. This devastation caused a major impact on the surrounding wildlife and the natural environment in that area. Due to this tragedy, The United States government posed a new act, The National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) of 1969, which offset a great push toward sustaining a health environment. This act also greatly influenced the Clean Water Act and the Water Quality Act.

Almost a half-decade later America now has a sustainable university, Green University!
